Student Transcript-Enhanced Placement Study Technical Report

September 2013

A group of colleges, foundations, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, and researchers came together to explore strategies for improving student progression from high school to college and assessment and placement approaches through the Student Transcript-Enhanced Placement Study (STEPS). This technical report documents the STEPS process and methodology, findings, and implications, and outlines efforts to continue this research through additional research initiatives. It serves as a companion piece to Stepping Up: Progression in English and Math from High School to College, a practitioner brief for the field. This technical report begins with historical background and an outline of related efforts before turning to detailed and technical descriptions of the work in which colleges engaged through this study. The technical sections are useful for researchers wishing to replicate or extend the work described but can be skipped by readers more interested in the final section with findings, implications, and future activities.
