Jaime Sykes
Research and Planning Analyst, San Diego Community College District
Jaime Sykes is an emerging leader in the field of Institutional Research, Planning, and Effectiveness (IRPE) within the California Community Colleges system. With seven years of professional experience in IRPE, Jaime has established a reputation for their innovative approach to research, planning, and policy. Currently serving as a Research and Planning Analyst with the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) District Office, Jaime is dedicated to advancing institutional effectiveness and promoting equity across higher education.
In their role at SDCCD, Jaime conducts essential research on topics such as LGBTQ+ student and employee experiences, the San Diego Promise Program, and enrollment management, among other key projects. Through their work, Jaime is not only driving forward the district’s strategic objectives but also contributing to research efforts that highlight the unique challenges and needs of marginalized student populations. This research has played a significant role in shaping policies and initiatives that improve student outcomes and promote a more inclusive campus
environment.
Jaime’s dedication to fostering inclusivity extends beyond their professional work. They are one of the founding members of SDCCD’s District Queer Alliance and have been actively involved in co-planning the statewide SOGI Coalition. These initiatives are crucial for advancing equity and visibility for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff, and Jaime’s leadership has been vital in bringing together diverse voices to address sexual orientation and gender identity in the context of community colleges.
In addition to their work with SDCCD, Jaime has served as a consultant for The RP Group, further contributing their expertise to the broader field of institutional research and planning. They also hold the position of Vice President of the California Association for Institutional Research (CAIR), where they continue to advocate for effective data-driven decision-making and support the professional development of fellow researchers in the state.
Jaime’s educational journey reflects their commitment to understanding and applying knowledge in ways that benefit students and the broader community. They received their M.A. in Applied Anthropology from the University of South Florida and their B.A. in Anthropology from Southern Illinois University, after transferring from San Diego Mesa College. This strong academic background, combined with their professional experience, enables Jaime to approach research and planning with a unique interdisciplinary perspective, always striving to integrate multiple viewpoints and methodologies into their work.
Jaime’s notable contributions extend beyond their local institution, making an impact at the regional and statewide levels as well. Their work has informed research practices, policy development, and planning strategies, influencing key decisions that shape the future of the California Community Colleges system. Jaime’s leadership in the field of IRPE, particularly in the areas of equity-focused research and LGBTQ+ student advocacy, has made a lasting mark on the field. They are an emerging leader with a clear vision for the future, deeply committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity, advancing institutional effectiveness, and promoting equity across the higher education landscape.
