Overview
In 2008 and 2009, the Hewlett Leaders in Student Success program honored seven California Community Colleges that demonstrated promising and innovative approaches to success in basic skills. Their efforts go beyond serving discrete groups of students and focus on scaling up and sustaining basic skills success.
Many of the successful strategies that captured the attention of the Hewlett Leaders program started small, then spread into sustainable, campus-wide programs. In particular, the Hewlett Leaders program looked for colleges that use outcome data to validate success and whose approaches can be replicated in other schools.
Sharing information is a key goal of the program. To this end, the seven colleges received $15,000 to support dissemination of their best ideas through peer outreach including colloquia, workshops, and mentorships.
