The California Acceleration Project (CAP) Evaluation involved a two-year study of the effects of curricular redesign on the progress of students who placed into the remedial English and math sequence at 16 California community colleges. The primary outcome of interest was successful completion of transfer-level English and math courses.
Data for this evaluation came primarily from the the Management Information Systems (MIS) unit at the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office combined with assessment/placement data sourced directly from each participating college. A lead faculty member or researcher at each CAP college also completed an implementation survey that provided information on the specific ways in which acceleration was realized at each site.
The evaluation found large and robust increases in completion of transfer-level gatekeeper courses in English and math for those learners participating in accelerated pathways, with gains across all demographic and socioeconomic groups and placement levels.
